Vaccinations are a very important way to prevent infections. They work by exposing the body to a harmless part or version of the infection causing the body to make an immune repsonse to it. If the body then encounters the true illness, it is ready to put up a natural defence against the infection.
Puppy Vaccinations
If a puppy is seen before 12 weeks of age (usually at 8 weeks old), we recommend that they receive an initial vaccination against canine parvovirus and leptospirosis.
The main dog vaccination is usually given at 12 weeks of age or older. The vaccine is licenced to be administered from 10 weeks of age but we prefer to wait until they are 12 weeks old. We are happy for you discuss the reason for this with one of our veterinary surgeons if you would prefer the vaccine to be given at 10 weeks old.
The main vaccination provides cover against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parainfluenza.
The leptospirosis part of the vaccine needs to be adminstered twice, usually with a gap of 2 to 4 weeks between them. If a puppy is just given the full vaccine at (10) 12 weeks old then a leptospirosis vaccine needs to be given a few weeks later to complete the course.

Dog Vaccinations
Dogs require a booster vaccination every year to ensure the best protection. Once a dog has received the full vaccination in 2 consecutive years then the full vaccine is only required every 3 years. During the middle two years just the parvovirus and leptospirosis vaccine is required.
