Cat Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a very important way to prevent infections.  They work by exposing the body to a harmless part or version of the infection causing the body to make an immune repsonse to it.  If the body then encounters the true illness, it is ready to put up a natural defence against the infection.

Cat and Kitten Vaccinations

There are two main cat vaccinations that we use.  One prevents cat flu and enteritis, the other protects against feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).  Vaccinations can be given to kittens from 9 weeks of age.

Most boarding catteries insist that cats are vaccinated against cat flu and enteritis.  Feline leukaemia virus can only be caught from close contact with the virus/an infected cat.  Therefore cats kept entirely indoors may not require the FeLV vaccination.

Previously unvaccinated cats and kittens require the vaccinations to be given twice, each being spaced between 3 to 4 weeks apart.

Annual booster vaccinations are required to maintain protection and it is particularly important with the FeLV vaccine not to be late for the booster injection or the primary course may need to be repeated.
